How to Succeed

How to succeed in online courses

Success in online and hybrid courses is about more than just logging in. It involves planning, active engagement, asking for help, and using the many resources available to you at Cal State Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.

This page builds on the ideas in Online learning tips and expectations and Getting started with online learning.

Build strong learning habits

  • Log in to Canvas several times per week to review new content, announcements, and assignments.
  • Complete readings and activities before due dates so you have time to ask questions if needed.
  • Create a consistent weekly rhythm for each course (for example, “Mondays: watch lectures; Wednesdays: participate in discussions; Fridays: work on assignments”).
  • Set up a distraction-reduced study space and silence unnecessary notifications while you work.
  • Reflect regularly on what is working for you and adjust your strategies as needed.

Use campus resources strategically

You have access to the same support services as on-campus students, plus additional tools designed for online learning.

  • Meet with advisors to plan your course load and stay on track for graduation.
  • Use tutoring and writing support to strengthen your understanding of course material and improve your assignments.
  • Connect with librarians for help finding and evaluating sources for your projects.
  • Explore wellness, accessibility, and basic needs resources if you encounter challenges that affect your learning.

For a detailed list of services, see Online student support and campus services.

Communicate early and often

  • Reach out to your instructors before problems grow. It is easier to help when concerns are shared early.
  • Use the communication methods your instructor prefers (Canvas inbox, campus email, or office hours).
  • Let instructors know if you have difficulty accessing materials or meeting deadlines because of technology, work, or family responsibilities.
  • Respond to messages and feedback in a timely way so you can incorporate suggestions and stay connected.

Plan ahead for future terms

  • Use what you learn in your first online term to plan your schedule for future semesters.
  • Balance your mix of online, hybrid, and face-to-face classes in a way that supports your learning and life responsibilities.
  • Talk with advisors about online program options if you are interested in completing more of your degree online.
  • Celebrate your successes—each course you complete builds skills you can use in future classes and your career.
