Instructional Continuity: Online/Hybrid

When something disrupts in-person instruction - a campus closure, a personal emergency, or a sudden need to teach remotely - this page collects the resources, tools, and contacts you need to keep your course running. Whether you've taught online before or this is your first time, the goal is the same: minimize disruption for you and your students.

Quick-start checklist

If you need to switch to online teaching with little notice, work through this checklist in order. Most items take 15-30 minutes each.

  1. Confirm Canvas access. Log in to Canvas at csueastbay.instructure.com. If your course shell isn't there, email online@csueastbay.edu.
  2. Send a class announcement. Use Canvas Announcements to tell students what's happening, where to find materials, and when next class meets (asynchronously or via Zoom).
  3. Set up your Zoom room. Activate your CSUEB Zoom account at and post the meeting link in Canvas.
  4. Move this week's activities to Canvas. Discussions, readings, and assignments can move directly. Lectures can be recorded asynchronously (Panopto) or held live (Zoom).
  5. Plan assessments. Some quizzes and exams need adjustment for online proctoring or alternative formats. See course design section below.
  6. Hold virtual office hours. Post a Zoom link or use Calendly. Students with questions need a clear way to reach you.

Faculty support and tickets

Online Campus instructional designers can join you in your course shell, walk you through Canvas tools, or troubleshoot anything technical.

Student support

Make sure your students know where to go when they hit a snag. Common student support resources to reference in your syllabus and announcements:

  • Canvas help (24/7): 1-866-325-0853 - for login issues, course not loading, file submission problems
  • Tutoring and academic support: CSUEB Student Center for Academic Achievement
  • Tech access for students who lack it: point them to the campus loaner program and free Wi-Fi resources
  • Mental health and counseling: Student Health and Counseling Services - same as on-campus students
  • Disability support: Accessibility Services for accommodations like extended time and assistive tech

Tools (Zoom, Panopto, Canvas)

Zoom for synchronous meetings

Activate your CSUEB Zoom account at . Recommended settings: enable waiting room, require authentication for CSUEB-only meetings, set up co-hosts for large classes.

  • Schedule recurring meetings for your class period and post the link in Canvas
  • Record sessions to Panopto or the cloud so students who can't attend can watch later
  • For office hours, use a Personal Meeting Room and post the link prominently

Panopto for recorded lectures

Panopto integrates directly with Canvas. Record once, edit for clarity, and share through your Canvas course.

  • Record lectures asynchronously - record in 10-20 minute chunks rather than full 75-minute lectures
  • Add captions automatically for accessibility
  • Quizzing and embedded questions keep students engaged through video content

Canvas for everything else

Modules, assignments, discussions, gradebook, announcements - Canvas is your home base. The Canvas help line (1-866-325-0853) handles instructor and student issues 24/7.

Moving face-to-face activities online

Some activities translate directly. Others need rethinking. Common substitutions that work:

Lectures → Pre-recorded video

Use Panopto. Keep individual segments under 20 minutes. Add embedded questions to maintain engagement.

Discussions → Canvas Discussions

Asynchronous threaded discussions. Set clear participation expectations (e.g. one substantive post + two replies per week).

Group work → Canvas Groups + Zoom

Canvas Groups create private spaces with their own files and discussions. Students meet via Zoom breakout rooms or independently.

Exams → Canvas Quizzes + Respondus

For high-stakes exams, Respondus LockDown Browser provides proctoring. For lower-stakes, time-limited Canvas quizzes work well.

Office hours → Zoom + Calendly

Hold open office hours via Zoom (post link in Canvas) or use Calendly for scheduled 1:1 meetings.

Labs/studios → Hybrid

Hands-on activities are hardest to move online. Many programs use simulated labs, take-home kits, or hybrid sessions when possible.

Department-specific resources

Some departments have their own continuity guides tailored to their teaching modes (clinical, lab-based, studio, fieldwork). Reach out to your department for those - or contact Online Campus and we'll help you find the right resource.
